Is snoring harmful?

New research suggests that heavy snoring can cause hypertension and - as a result - increased blood pressure during sleep. Snoring is often associated with a medical condition known as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).

While snoring is seen mostly as an irritation, it is now seen as a symptom of more serious conditions - a health warning. Sleep disturbances caused by snoring can affect your health, intellectual and physical performance, and general well being.

  Treatment.

Snoring and symptoms of OSA maybe alleviated by simple
lifestyle changes such as:

• losing weight
• regular exercise
• 3 hours before sleep avoid alcohol, heavy meals and inappropriate medications

Medical treament of OSA includes:

• Surgery
• Nasal CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) - a machine
which forces air to keep the airway open.
• Fitted oral dental devices attached to the teeth to hold the lower
jaw forward

The aveoTSD is now available for the treatment of OSA.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)

OSA is a condition often not recognized until health deteriorates and serious conditions appear. OSA occurs when the tongue is drawn against the airway with such force that the throat is closed and breathing stops. This airway obstruction causes the heart rate to fall below normal with decreases in blood oxygen levels.

The obstruction will normally not clear until the brain oxygen levels fall low enough to prompt a release of adrenalin to prevent suffocation. This may happen hundreds of times each sleep period.

The sleeper may be jarred into partial wakefulness and may experience an abnormally high heart rate due to the adrenalin release. This impedes deep, restorative sleep and reduces blood oxygen levels. More >

OSA is being linked to an increased risk of:

hypertension/increased blood pressure
strokes
cardiovascular disorders
depression
impotence
reflux/heartburn
obesity
diabetes
memory problems

The most common symptoms are daytime tiredness
(affecting both physical and intellectual performance) and
falling asleep at inappropriate times (increasing the
risk of vehicle and work related accidents).

Check with your doctor if you think you may have OSA.

Snoring is a major cause of relationship breakdown

Snoring, in itself, can cause hypertension and is a leading
indicator for Obstructive Sleep Apnea

• OSA is now seen as a primary cause of heart disease,
depression, diabetes, fatigue, loss of concentration, car accidents,
anxiety and aggression.

Over 20% of the population, men, women and children have OSA, but 95% have not been diagnosed.

Treatments:

CPAP - a machine that forces air through a mask while the patient sleeps. Cost - $1000+, with following costs
for masks and filters.
CPAP has less than a 45% compliance rate - cpap is uncomfortable, hard to transport and requires power.

Dental Implants - Mandibular Advancment Devices, the idea being
to slowly advance the jaw over time, bringing the tongue forward
to open the airway. Cost - $1600+, with followup. MAD's are shown
to work but have been shown to cause pain and problems with the jaw.

Surgery - There are numerous surgical procedures to solve snoring
and OSA. The Pillar Procedure sets 3 tension pillars into the soft
palate, other procedures are designed to reduce obstruction of the
airway. Cost - $1500 - $10 000+. Invasive, painful, non corrective
and efficacy is inconclusive.

There is no single treatment or device that will solve snoring and OSA
for every patient. The goal is efficacy - how effective the treatment is
for the majority; and compliance - do patients use the treatment to
gain full effect.

At a cost of $149 Canadian, the aveoTSD is a simple, effective and
compliant device. It costs far less than all other common treatments,
it has been clinically studied (FDA and Health Canada compliant)
